Surat Al-Feel

The Story Behind the Revelation

In 570 CE, Abraha al-Ashram, the Abyssinian governor of Yemen, built a magnificent cathedral in San'a hoping to divert Arab pilgrimage away from the Kaaba. When that failed, he marched on Makkah with a massive army led by war elephants, intending to demolish the Kaaba itself. The Quraysh could not fight such a force. Abdul-Muttalib, the Prophet's grandfather, famously said: "The House has a Lord who will defend it." The people withdrew to the mountains, and what happened next became so famous that the Arabs dated their calendar by it. Allah sent flocks of birds carrying stones of baked clay, and the mighty army was destroyed.

Why It Matters

This happened in the same year the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born. Allah protected the Kaaba before the man who would restore its true purpose had even arrived.

Key Takeaways

What This Surah Teaches

01

Power means nothing against Allah's will

Abraha had the strongest army in Arabia and war elephants no tribe could match. None of it mattered. Strength that stands against Allah is an illusion.

02

Allah's soldiers can be the smallest creatures

Birds and pebbles destroyed what armies could not face. Allah is not limited by size or convention, and His means are beyond our calculations.

03

Allah prepares history before we understand it

The Kaaba was saved the very year the Prophet ﷺ was born. Events that seem random are often part of a plan we only recognize later.

💭

Think Deeper

Have you ever faced something that felt too big to handle? What would change if you truly believed that no force can stand against Allah's plan?
